Why Are Ship's Called She?
There are several explanations for this. Some say during the early days of sailing every ship was always dedicated to some goddess, and as a result the ship was referred to as "she". Another theory is that the crew always thought the ship "cradled" them like their mother and as a result treated it with a great deal of respect. In most Romance languages the ship is always referred to as "she" and it is quite possible that English sailors began to adopt this practice as well. Since the American Navy is modled after the Royal Navy the tradition carried over.
Then there is the contemporary explanation:
There is always a great deal of bustle around her.
There is usually a gang of men about her.
She has waist and stays.
She is well-stacked.
It takes a lot of paint to keep her looking good.
A ship costs a lot to dress.
She sometimes blows a bit of smoke.
She requires periodic overhauls to extend her useful life.
It is not the initial expense that breaks you, it is her upkeep.
She can be all decked out.
She shows her topsides, hides her bottom.
It takes an experienced man to handle her correctly.
Without a man at the helm, she is uncontrollable.
She may not mind her helm or answer to the old man when the going gets rough.
She gets her breast-lines out promptly if she is single-screwed
When leaving port she always leaves awake.
When coming into port, she always heads for the buoys.

I used this web site, Have Web Sites will Travel, as a means of showing and recording my travels and exploits over the years 2003 to 2009 as I criss crossed the United States, Canada and Mexico. Going North in the summer and South in the winter. Zig zagging from West to East and back again and again until I had seen all I wanted to see. A sort of Zig Zagging, Vagabond Snowbird Road Warrior with only one primary rule. Stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
The name or title of this web site was inspired by the 1940's and 1950's radio show starring John Dehner and the 1950's TV (Television) show starring Richard Boone, entitled Have Gun Will Travel. As a child growing up I either listened to or watched Have Gun Will Travel for years. Even today I have dozens of copies of the OTR (Old Time Radio) program Have Gun Will Travel in my collection of OTR programs. Recently the old TV show Have Gun Will Travel with Richard Boone has become available by season on DVD. I have been adding them to my DVD collection of classic TV shows.
During these adventure years I continued my PHP and MySQL web programming work, as a traveling webmaster, workamper and web programmer, through this web site by interconnecting my parent domain www.WWWHelper.com with this site. I guess you can say I was taking telecommuting (aka e-working or an e-worker) to the limit.
